The National Hotel

The National Hotel

7 out of 10 stars (7 / 10)

Recently we went to the National Hotel in Richmond on a Saturday night for my nephew Hughie’s 4th birthday. We were there for an early dinner with a group of 7 adults plus the two kids.

It was a nice evening and there were quite a few tables occupied in the courtyard so we ended up with a section of the indoor area to ourselves which allowed the kids to play and wander a bit.

We went up to the bar to order which was reasonably well staffed and moved quickly. Between the group of us we ended up ordering quite a range of the items from the menu. The menu itself was expansive and quite adventurous but was lacking the pub classics like a traditional parma or burger.

Trent and I went for a selection of small items to share as we were still full from our days’ activities. We ordered the dumpling sampler (two pieces of each of the types of steamed dumpling on offer), crispy duck sliders, and roti bread with peanut satay.

The duck sliders had a great flavour and were by far my favourite. The dumplings and roti dish were ok but not anything special.

The most notable food item from around the table was the chips. They were the one food item the National Hotel definitely excels at and would be worth going back for.

The service was very friendly and attentive. One staff member also stayed to sing happy birthday to Hughie after he had delivered a serve of ice cream with a birthday candle in it.

Overall we rated The National Hotel 7 stars.
