Winchelsea Tea Rooms and Cafe

Winchelsea Tea Rooms and Cafe

(6 / 10)

On the trip to Timboon from Melbourne or back again, Winchelsea is roughly half way and so a good place to stop to break up the trip. We have chosen Winchelsea Tea Rooms and Cafe a couple of times now. The building is a lovely old bluestone building which was the local shire hall. It possibly still is but I’m not sure.

The times we’ve been to the tea rooms we’ve found the service a little frosty. That being said the food comes promptly and the building almost makes up for it.

Virginia ordered a latte and I ordered an iced coffee. The iced coffee was served in a traditional milkshake glass and had ice-cream to cool it rather than ice.  The first food item we chose from the menu had sold out so instead we chose the roast veggie panini. We also had a sausage roll and bowl of chips. The roast veggie panini was particularly good and the sausage roll and chips were enjoyable.

The cafe feels a little like an add on to the beautiful building which is a bit of a pity because there is so much potential. If it lived up to that potential I could imagine stopping there each trip. There are quite a few alternatives in Winchelsea and so we will give them a try next.  We will be back some day because after all it is a tea rooms and we haven’t tried the scones with jam and cream.

We gave the Winchelsea Tea Rooms and Cafe 6 stars.

  1. We have also visited this one. It was something I had wanted to do each time we passed on the way to Melbourne. Like you when the time finally came it was a bit disappointing, and as you said the tea rooms are a bit of an ad on and lack any feeling of permanence. I will be interested to hear what you think of the Devonshire tea should you make a return visit.
