Rubens, Hepburn Springs

Rubens, Hepburn Springs

(7 / 10)

For our first wedding anniversary we’d planned on going to Daylesford which is where we went for our first weekend away together. We’d even booked the same house. About a week before the date Virginia was contacted by the owner of the accommodation we had booked, saying that a tree had fallen in the backyard, doing enough damage that we could no longer stay there. After quite a bit of googling we found an alternative place close by in Hepburn Springs.

The first night we were up there we decided on Rubens for dinner.  They serve a Mediterranean style cuisine. We hadn’t booked but were lucky enough to get a table as someone else had just cancelled their booking for two.  The place was fairly full.  It had a nice atmosphere.

We ordered 3 starters to share because neither of us were particularly hungry, which were the Garlic, Rosemary and Pepper Pizza, Arancini (traditional fried rice balls infused with pumpkin and tarragon served with a rocket salad, parmesan & lemon mayonnaise), and Flathead Goujons (beer battered and lightly fried with a rocket salad, served with sweet chilli sauce and lemon mayonnaise).

I thought the garlic pizza was one of the best I’d had. The other two dishes were nice but not overly impressive. The service was nice but could have been better.

If you ever find yourself in Hepburn Springs I’d recommend trying Rubens.  I’d be keen to go back and try one of their main pizzas. But make sure you book a table!

We gave Rubens 7 stars.
