As a present for our wedding anniversary, Trent booked us tickets to see the Wizard of Oz musical at the Regent Theatre. For dinner before the show I chose the French restaurant Bistrot D’Orsay opposite the Regent Theatre on Collins St.
I had booked a table in advance which was lucky because the restaurant filled up very quickly with other pre-theatre diners. Our table was next to the internal connecting door into the Atheneum Theatre where the performers for Bring It On the musical (also showing that night – I think Trent chose well) were warming up in the foyer. Trent wisely keep his eyes on me over dinner rather than the cheerleaders performing over my shoulder.
After our waiter told us the specials my meal decision was easy – the special homemade gnocchi beef ragu. Trent chose a traditional Steak Frites (“classic Paris favourite with cafe de Paris butter”). While waiting for our meals we were served crusty bread and butter.
Both meals were simple but delicious. Our waiter was enthusiastic but sometimes hard to catch, and the restaurant was basic but had a good traditional French feel.
Overall we decided Bistro D’Orsay deserved 7 stars as a solid pre-theatre restaurant option.
