On our weekend away in Marysville we decided to go out as a group to Black Spur Inn for an early dinner with the kids in tow. We called during the day to book a table for 6 adults, and 4 kids, and requested 2 high chairs. We were told the kitchen didn’t open until 6pm, so we decided to arrive a little early and be ready to put our order in at 6pm on the dot. We were shown into the restaurant which has wonderful large windows looking out to the garden and bush surrounding the Inn.
The menu had a good range of classic pub meals and a few more adventurous ones, with an extra menu of specials and a separate kids menu. We ordered two Chef’s Entree Sampling plates for the group to share as a starter, and a range of main meals between us. While we waited for our food to arrive we took the kids outside for a play in the gardens which they loved – lots of room to run and interesting things to look at.
Back at the table when our entree platters arrived, we were very impressed. The platter was a taste of all of the entrees on the menu (except the soup) and the quality of the food and the way it was served was fantastic. Of particular note was the smoked buxton trout mousse and the thai beef salad. The platters came with bread, as well as a large serving of bread that arrived on the table after we had ordered. We definitely weren’t going to go hungry.
Our mains included steak, thai vegetable curry, lamb shoulder, and a duck dish from the specials menu. My lamb shoulder was disappointing – it was a large portion of lamb served on a base of polenta, and I felt the dish was more about quantity than quality. It was very old school country style meal and cut of the meat. The thai vegetable curry dishes were nice but basic.
The stand out dish was Trent’s duck which he said was the best duck dish he had eaten for a long time.
While the families started to pack up the kids to go, Trent ordered an affogato with frangelico for dessert (which I helped him eat). It came quickly and was very enjoyable.
We scored it 6 stars overall.
